Regional Tour – Sheffield
Today Sayeeda visited Sheffield as part of a regional tour of the region.
She spoke to students at Longley Park Sixth Form Centre about how the House of Lords works and about her role in the Chamber.
She then visited Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, accompanied by Spencer Pitfield, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Penistone and Stocksbridge. At the club’s Hillsborough ground she heard about the plans to build a major community space at the club’s Hillsborough Stadium.
The current proposals, which have already received planning permission and support from the City Council, would see Sheffield Wednesday giving up to 100,000 square feet of unused space over to organisations like local health trusts, charities and local police.
Sayeeda said:
“The work that Sheffield Wednesday is doing to support the local community is a huge credit to the club and to the city of Sheffield. I am sure that the community space will bring huge benefits for residents across Sheffield and beyond.”
Spencer Pitfield said:
“I was so overwhelmed with these community plans when I visited the club in December that I wanted Sayeeda to visit as soon as possible. I see no reason why many more clubs shouldn’t be following the excellent leadership of Sheffield Wednesday FC.”
Mr. Nick Parker, Chief Executive of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club commented:
“I am grateful to Baroness Warsi and Spencer for their interest. Our club takes our role in the wider community very seriously and will continue to strive to do the very best for local people. I am pleased that both Sayeeda and Spencer leave here having a much better understanding of what we are hoping to achieve here at the club.”
